Border Narrative Project

For the Border Narrative project, our mission is to revolutionize the narrative surrounding the U.S.-Mexican border. Throughout history, this narrative has been dehumanizing, xenophobic, and racist. Our goal is to dismantle these negative perceptions by highlighting the power of storytelling from those directly impacted by this historical narrative. By reshaping the narrative and preserving live testimonies, we aim to empower future generations and foster a sense of community. We believe in challenging the negative stereotypes imposed on immigrants and leveraging their experiences to create hope, opportunities, and support within the immigration community. The resilience demonstrated by our community in overcoming systemic barriers is a testament to our cultural wealth and the potential for advancement. We strive to provide support and dignity to those who seek assistance from their community, ensuring that negative stigmas associated with our origins do not define us. Instead, we aim to foster an environment where immigrants are embraced and supported with open arms. To achieve systemic change, we must strive for greater representation of our community in all areas, including healthcare, livable wages, educational opportunities, and economic growth/mobility. By shedding light on reality faced by immigrants, we hope to foster understanding, empathy, and meaningful change in society.

The New Mexico Immigrant Law Center (NMILC) is a nonprofit organization that offers free legal assistance and resources to immigrants residing in New Mexico. Their primary objective is to promote justice and equality by empowering low-income immigrant communities through various collaborative legal services, advocacy efforts, educational initiatives, and community resources. NMILC works in partnership with numerous organizations throughout the community to disseminate information about legal issues affecting immigrants and provide policy guidance. They strive to ensure that immigrants have access to accurate and reliable legal information, empowering them to make informed decisions about their rights and options. One of the key ways NMILC fulfills its mission is by providing direct services through innovative workshop and group-processing models. By leveraging these approaches, along with a robust pro bono attorney network and a dedicated legal team committed to holistic services, they are able to deliver high-quality assistance free of charge. In addition to their direct services, NMILC also focuses on leadership programs within the legal profession. Recognizing the need to amplify the voices of immigrants and people of color within the legal field, they prioritize mentorship and professional development opportunities. Through these programs, NMILC aims to cultivate the next generation of social justice legal professionals who will advocate for the rights and well-being of marginalized communities. Overall, the New Mexico Immigrant Law Center plays a vital role in supporting and empowering immigrant communities in New Mexico by providing free legal assistance, education, and advocacy while also working towards creating a more equitable and just society.
